After giving the Spitfires a coat of VMS gloss varnish to seal and protect the paint, the next job it to apply the decsals.
I used the kit decals for the clipped wing aircraft. The decsls are terrible and didn't want to come off the backing paper without soaking in hot water. The under wings get a roundel, some support points and some electronics warnings.
The top of the wings also get roundels along with stripes indicating the walkway areas.
To match the dodgy decals a dodgy photo of the unit markings. They are for No.278 Air Sea Rescue Squadron RAF based at Martlesham Heath, Suffolk during 1944. The letters and roundel are a single decal and were horrible to get moving. I should have split them up and they would have been easier to handle.
For the other aircraft I used Foxbot decals. The markings for this aircraft are similar to the clipped wing aircraft with a different roundel style. Like most aftermarket decals these work a lot better. They are thinner and conform better than the thicker Airfix decals.
The wing tops are also similar.
The fuselage markings are made of three parts making them easier to handle but trickier to line up. The aircraft is from No.111 Squadron based at North Weald during 1941.
There is some pilot heraldry on either side of the fuselage just below the cockpit.
The decals need sealing in before weathering.
